Fall in McCall

Looking out on Valley County

Looking out on Valley County

Hope this finds you enjoying the wonderful fall weather and activities.  We have been pretty one-sided around here.  It has been nothing but horses.  No running, biking, lake time: and I am really enjoying every day!

I have a great friend and client who is staying up a few days a week to help and ride, along with a fantastic local girl.  I do miss my summer group.  I am also getting some help from an unexpected place, South Africa?! Who’d a guessed here in McCall!  My best help and my most abused, Josh, has been here for the month and I am having anxiety thinking about him leaving!!  Good thing I will be closer to him in Boise and he can come up more often.

Our Boise move has been huge on our minds.  Josh took a bed and a table down to our NEW HOUSE there today and I start moving horses down the later part of October.  I am looking forward to being part of so many friends and clients lives this winter.   I am trying not to think about Arizona weather.  You may have to help me in mid February.

Our barn is still full and all the horses are great.  Zymon and Vivika are making thier eventing debut this weekend at the Allison Springer clinic at Stanton Farms.  Janelle is going to ride a new mount and Foster is going for more schooling.  It should be a great weekend.  Warm sun, amazing facility and great instruction.

Next weekend I will be in Boise Friday-Saturday September 30 October 1.  Please call Shelley at 208-761-3111 to schedule a lesson.  Then we are off to Woodside, California the following Wednesday for the Event at Woodside.   Back in Boise for lessons October 14-15.  I am going to be in Salt Lake City October 28-29 to clinic.  Contact Cara Adria at 435-901-3877 for more information.

Hope to see you all soon!

Aspen Fall 2011

Aspen Farm was another great event.  The weather was warm and the course fantastic as always.  The new water caught quite a few horses with its shadows and newness.

Foster and I had an educational first event.  He was better than expected in the dressage with a 31.  He found one “squirrel!” in the ring and kept his head down for the most part.  Show jumping was not our best day, with one stop at fence two and a very demanding ride.  I am looking forward to taking him in the ring more.   Cross country he made up for it with a solid run with out any funny business after fence two! Pretty fun over all.

Looking forward to the calendar:  Josh and I are off to Telluride with family next weekend.  Allison Springer is coming to Idaho September 24-25.  We are off to The Event at Woodside October 6-9 and then Galway Downs HT November 2-6.

In the middle of all this I am moving to Boise for the winter and am currently accepting horses in training and scheduling lessons for the fall months.  I am going to be based out of Pierce Park Stables in North Boise.

It is hard to have this much fun!

Where did they go?

So, I seem to be left alone.  Josh is back at Aspen, working on their new water jump.

Emily is back in school at BSU.

Michelle is at St Andrew’s in Laurinburg, NC.

Kathryn is in school playing soccer (hopefully not for long; I keep threatening to tell lies to her coach to get her benched).

That leaves me with 10-14 horses on any given day alone… I will try not to take it personally and hire someone soon!  I had a great evening with a new prospect today.  We will find out what she thinks of long hours and bad pay…

On a better note; we are off to Aspen Farm in two days.  I am super excited about riding my mothers new horse Painted Perfectly, in his novice depute.

We are also dragging my new steed, Zymin with us for his first taste of being a WSH horse (on the road a lot!) So, don’t move to quickly around me this weekend, I may get spooked off!

We are really starting to make plans for Boise this winter with a small Florida interlude.  I am planning on having the barn moved down to Pierce Park Stables by the first of November.  Then we are off to Galway Downs.  I am looking forward to it with the usual amount of anxiety.

Another positive, I now accept credit cards!  Just in case you are like me and don’t carry cash or use a check book any more, I hope this helps!

See you at Aspen Farm this weekend.

Jug Mountain Retreat – 2011

Everyone at the Wasatch Sport Horse barn is simultaneously exhausted and energized from the Jug Mountain Equestrian Retreat this past weekend. The weather was beautiful, the food was delicious and the company couldn’t have been better.

We started out Friday morning in the crisp, cold mountain air feeding the horses and cleaning the stalls. We then warmed up with the sun with a morning session of yoga with Sphie and all of the dogs winding through the blankets and yoga mats not wanting to miss out on any of the fun.

As soon as we had our coffee and cantaloupe, it was off to the races: jumping lessons, a photography lecture with helpful tricks and tips on photographing your horse with Tracey Bish, a trail ride into the mountains, a driving demo from Carol Brown and finally a fun evening with food and drinks and lively conversation at the house.

Saturday started out the same way with more sun salutations and then we were joined by Nadine Schlonsok, a USDF Gold and Silver medalist from Trier, Germany, for dressage lessons and a lecture/discussion on the German training scale. It was another day of laughter and sunshine with the gorgeous McCall backdrop. Green corn tamales with beans & watermelon salsa for lunch (yum!), a demonstration/discussion on how to turn out your horse, followed by pizza and a talk with Pam Thomas on work/life balance.

Sunday started out right with more yoga, jumping lessons with Stephanie and dressage lessons with Nadine. In the late morning, we all got to get back onto the yoga mats and blankets in the sunshine for an interactive talk on rider biomechanics with Shelley Thomas. In the afternoon there were more jumping lessons and reluctant goodbyes amidst the tack cleaning & trailer packing.

We said goodbye to WSH working student, Emily, who was headed straight back to college. Emily (who just passed her Pony Club H-A, Congrats Em!!) is going to be missed around the barn, but we’re looking forward to WSH adventures in Boise this winter and back in McCall next summer.

(Speaking of Boise this winter…WSH is staying in Idaho for the winter! Stephanie will be heading to Boise in November, so …)

Thanks to everyone who came and participated in the retreat. It was a raging success because we have so many wonderful, talented, engaged and FUN riders among us. We’re looking forward to doing it again next year. Please post in the comments below some of your favorite highlights from the weekend! We’d love to hear from you!

Long Summer Days

Morning ride with friends

Morning ride with friends

I am sorry that I haven’t made this blog a priority. Summer in McCall is so spectacular and there is sooo much to do; sitting at my computer is not high on my list. Today, I am not leaving this chair until I have crossed off a few “to do” items; so here I go!

Morning sun on lake

Summer really is spectacular here. The mountains are bright green with tons of  snow and water.  That, along with the long (up to 17 hours of daylight) warm days and cool starry nights makes for a perfect summer. We have been trying to run, bike, enjoy the lake (have yet to get wet) and each other this summer.

Michelle and CaitlinMichelle and Caitlin at Louie Lake

Kathryn Kathryn at home

have all been working hard at the barn. Emily is with us from Boise where she returns to school at Boise State this fall. Michelle is leaving us in August to start her college life in Laurenburg, NC. Can’t wait to go visit! Kathryn is staying here in McCall for several more years of torture. And Caitlin left this morning to travel home to Tucson. We will miss her!
My mum is up for a few weeks of horse fun and Josh is heading home from Alaska to join us in Montana!
We have had four horses to back this summer and have loved their daily learning process. The two oldest are hacking up the mountain now!
We are enjoying the few sale horses we have in; taking turn riding and jumping them trying to find where they best will work in life. Check then out by clicking here.
Allison Springer was in Bellevue with us last weekend and we all learned loads and loved it.  We are looking forward to seeing her and several other top riders next week at Rebecca Farm! We are so lucky to live in this beauty and get 4 star riders visiting us regularly!
We are heading up to the tenth anniversary of Rebecca Farm next week with a gaggle of horses and students. I have just one to ride, but don’t think I will be getting bored!
Our summer doesn’t slow down after Rebecca. We are off to YR Benefit, Stanton Farm, Aspen Farm, Allison Springer Clinic and Woodside before we hang up our coats. Check out our calendar online for the latest plans.  Looking forward to seeing you soon.

Heads up!

Heads up! June is here and summer is almost upon us.  We started with a Boise clinic, Michelle graduating from high school, me taking the ICP Advisor interview (they want me as an advisor)!  From there, we took 6 horses to Aspen Farm in Yelm, WA.

Shelley and Trep finished 2nd in the TH, while Kaitlyn and Lion won the OI, Shawna had great rides with out the right pattern, Emily was at her personal best and Josh and I loved being there with everyone.  At the begining I didn’t mind not riding, but half way through x-country I was starting to get a bit sour on it.  I will try not to do that again!

Josh helped at Aspen and is now in Bristol Bay, AK for a bit.  We will miss him:(

This past weekend I taught a clinic at Stanton Farm in Deary, Idaho and loved it!  Wonderful people, jumps, terrain, landscape; it has it all.  Looking forward to going back soon.

Now looking forward to IDEA clinic and Derby this weekend in Kuna.  Rafter K is right around the corner July 8-10 and then The Event at Rebecca Farm.

Sorry to say, our new working student had truck trouble today and won’t be arriving till later in the week.  Emily and Kathryn are looking forward to more girls and less me!

Hope to see you soon!

WSH in Idaho!

We are now in full swing here in McCall, or at least as full gear as you can get in McCall in May.  This morning we had over an inch of snow on the ground, while yesterday I was teaching in short sleeves!

I am excited to introduce our new employee Emily Rosenbaum.   She is staying in McCall for the summer helping with everything from riding to coaching and mucking.   She is studying for her B and HA the end of the summer.  She and her horse are great additions to the barn.

Right now are starting a few nice babies, working with a few young ones and looking forward to the busy season ahead.  Our schedule is constantly in flux due to weather, health and opportunity.  Stay tuned at http://www.wasatchsporthorses.com/calendar/ for the latest news.

Hope to see you soon!

Family time in Telluride

Greetings from winter wonderland in Colorado.  Josh and I are down in the mountains of Telluride waiting for the the EHV-1 to calm down.  My brother Paul is opening a new resturant in Sawpit, Colorado.  The Sawpit Food Club is going to be fantastic.  Check it out along with his Fat Kid Ice Cream online and in person!

Schedules a changing!

Happy spring in the mountains.  We have a few inches of new snow in McCall, 50+ mph winds while teaching  immediately following a few summer like days.

Wendy Wergeles and I just finished teaching a fantastically fun clinic in Bountiful, Utah.  The horses and people were fun, forward and open to try new things.  Even with a last minute change of venues, people were excited to be riding and learning (at least I was!)  I had the opportunity to ride some lovely horses, meet some new friends and re-connect with some old ones.  I look forward to coming back again soon.

With an outbreak of EHV-1, an equine virus, our protective nature is in full alert.  The virus is traveling around the west and we are hoping to keep it from spreading further by keeping our horses home for a bit.  For more information check out Idaho Equine’s Blog.   The IDEA clinic and derby at Rocky Hollow has been rescheduled for June 25 and 26.

Weather and virus’ contingent, we are planning on schooling at Rafter K in Bellevue, Idaho May 28-29.  Limited stabling is available at Rafter K for $25 a night, group lessons are $40 privates $60 including the schooling fee.  Let me know if you are interested.

Other big news in the schedule is Karen O’Connor is coming back to the west!  She is planning her trip before Rebecca Farm Event.   She is planning on staying on for the event and will be available for coaching through the event.  Please spread the word!  Having such instruction consistant in our area is an amazing opprotunity and I hope we can all find a way to take full advantage of it.

Josh and I are taking a few days to help my brother open a resturant in Colorado!  I hope to return to blue skies, green grass and healthy horses.

Look forward to seeing you soon!

Home!

The boys and I landed in McCall yesterday to snow flurries, a barn that looks like a US proving ground, a refrigerator-less kitchen and a mountain of mail; and we are soooo happy to be here!  We had a fire, wine and pizza last night and woke up to a blue bird day.  We are going to take the next 10 days to clean up and prepare for the upcoming summer!  We are planning on grading, spreading, cleaning, burning and painting.

Josh and I spent a few days in the Grand Canyon before our northern migration.

This weekend we will be teaching in Middleton Friday and Saturday.
