Considering northern migration…

Greetings from another sunny day in Arizona.
We have been having a wonderful time and are torn with feelings of homesickness and dread of returning to cold weather and bad footing.

St John's 2011

Last week we went to St John’s HT here is Arizona and had a fatastic time! It has been dumbed, “red neck eventing” and I think that is a good spin on what it is. Janelle flew down and rode her brand new horse in the pre comp division and ended in third place, while Mum and Pam were second, Karen and Paige both won their divisions and Elliot was great on his first trip to town. I could give you a commentary about the goat heads, dirt, wind and rocks, but then you wouldn’t believe that we had such a great time; so there, all the horses and people were great!

Congratulations to Randall’s of Scottsdale, Arizona on their purchase of “Yes We Can.” He will be missed in the barn but I can assure you he is happy and well suited for his new career. He will be traveling with his new jockey, a 15 year old fantastic rider competing in equitation. I hope all the girls at the barn fall in love with him as we did and spoil him rotten!

Josh is now here for the final countdown of our stay in Arizona. Within the next 10 days we are planning on loading up our stuff, horses, dogs, cat and tons of Trader Joe merchandise and heading home. I am told there is no snow on our lawn and sun is just around the corner.

The calendar is full of fun stuff starting with bi-monthly clinics in Boise, WRCTA clinic in Salt Lake, and IDEA clinic in Kuna. Check out the calendar and come play with us soon!

March Madness

Greetings from the sun!  We are in the midst of March madness.  Someone is flying in or out practically every day in March and we are loving the activity. We have 6 horses, lessons, friends and family all month.  We are busy training (for something all the time it seems) or cooking, running or just catching up.  I will give you the very brief breakdown of the month to this point.

March started off with a visit from 2 Pony Clubs for 3 days.  Wonderful kids, ponies, parents (mine escpecially) and friends.

We followed that with the Catalinia marathon the following weekend.  Michelle, Shelley, and Kristi joined us from Idaho to run 26.2 miles over some wicked terrain on the island.  We all survived and are better for it.

Intrepid and I are competing this weekend at 3 Day Ranch in southern California.  We have some great friends and clients joining us there.  Can’t wait.

Brooke, a nice three year old from Salt Lake City posed for the camera.

Getting settled…sort of…finally?

Elliot with new look!

Elliot with new look!

Greetings from Wasatch in the Sun.  We have been here for 2 full weeks and finally feel like we may be in full swing.  With 4 horses clipped, pulled, shod, bathed and 2 more in full work, all 6 are looking good.

Breezer with Family at Bellisima

Yesterday, mum and I took a few to Bellisima Ranch in Cave Creek for some jump schooling. Wesley and Breezer were great; as was the weather and the company.  It was great to be back at the “ranch” and see everyone there.  Breezer’s extended family came to cheer him on (and spoil him.) He loved it!  I look forward to taking a few horses over every week for a little tune.

Josh and Trav learning to rope...

Josh and the Cross Country Hardware guys have moved onto the east with stops in Louisianna, North Carolina, Virginia and Vermont for their spring run.  I hope to make it east for a visit and look forward to Josh coming back for a week in March.  It was great having them here. They spent time building, learning to rope and hiking while they were here.  I tried to get them to build me some more jumps, yet had a hard time producing the materials!  Hopefully next time!

Doyle and my Dad, Vern showing them how to do it

This weekend is looking like lessons, sunshine and riding.  Looking forward to it!

Our first combined test is coming up next Sunday in Cave Creek.  I am hoping the “yellow” horse will be up to it!

The calendar is filling up with fun stuff.  Come join us or schedule your own clinic or lessons.  Contact me any time!  Hope to see you soon.

Wasatch in the Sun January 31, 2011

Wasatch Sport Horse’s is on tour!  We are now, for the most part, settled in Wickenburg, Arizona; a small western town 60 miles NW of Phoenix.  The horses are still getting used to the change in landscape, trains (goes right by the barn and arena multiple times a day,)  rabbits, pigs, and cows!  Josh is here for 10 days to build some jumps and help with the transition.  We are loving having friends and family here and long days outside in the sun!  The temps have been in the 60′s-70′s these first few days.

Josh cleaned the rig, and it looks great.  I plan on getting Shilo and Tucker in for their “spring cleaning” soon too.

Thomas (the cat) and my mother are in full campaign mode for who will rule the roost.  Mum is up one right now with the squirt gun, but I think Thomas makes ground while we are out of the house.  I will keep you up to date as the battle continues.   We may be turning into real eccentrics; we bought a harness for Thomas so we can take him outside…

Tomorrow is opening day for our first reconized event of the year, 3 Day Ranch.  Looking forward to The North Wind and Intrepid going along with friends and clients from Yuma, Wickenburg and Idaho.

Our calendar is full of fun clinics, schooling shows, HJ shows, events, theatre, hiking, marathon (urggg) and more.

Keep in touch!

Happy New Year

Holiday Powder Day

Holiday Powder Day

Greetings from the winter wonderland.  3′ of new snow just after Christmas :) followed by a week of -20 to 5 degree weather :( McCall is not a great place to try and ride horses full time in the winter <shocking!>  The last few days have warmed up into the 20′s and I have regained my sanity. We are now having a wonderful time with the barn full of nice horses.

I am busy looking ahead to the year to come and look forward to expanding on the great things of 2010 (winning events, Karen and Allison in the west, wine tasting and students moving up sucessfully) while scaling back on the not so great things (being away every weekend, working 14 hours a day, no local horse shows, only 1 lesson with great new dressage trainer in Boise).

So now is the time to let me know what you want to see happen in 2011.  Take a look at the calendar and your goals and lets talk.  The snow is great here in McCall and the chairlift is a great place for discussions, so come on up!  Or we can do it ring (or pool) side in Arizona next month.  I am open to either.

Wishing you and yours a great start to the new year!

USEA Annual Meeting

I did not come back with a tan, even though the weather was all sun and warm.  I did not come home with any Christmas gifts, even though the convention center was adjacent to a great shopping area.  I did not come home with sore muscles, even though I am “training” for a mountain marathon and was surrounded by great hikes, places to run and a fitness center.  I have little to show besides my full notebook and my credit card receipts from the USEA Annual Meeting, and it was worth it.

I am so excited about where Wasatch Sport Horses, its clients, our horses and the sport are going.

For the most part, I kept my mouth shut when it was time to be placed on committees.  I am not organized enough in my own business to commit time and energy into yet another time consuming endeavor.  Yet, I am now committed to helping with several!

Our sport is full of intelligent and outgoing people who would like to find the ways where entertainment meets the needs of equine and sport.  They/we are committed to finding it through education, availability, opportunity and determination.

I am helping develop a program to make our professionals more available for advice and assistance at competitions as well as in our local areas.  It is our job to help people understand the best way to take care of our horses and in return get the most out of our sport.

I also hope to help empower our officials to feel comfortable and confident that we are all working together for the sport, its clients and it’s future.   All that is very general and I will keep you informed as we put more programs into place that effect us here in the west.

It was wonderful and some times trying to catch up with friends from around the country and abroad.

I had a chance to go for a quick hike with Rebbecca Howard (Canadian silver medalist at the WEG 2010) and Jan Byyny (top international event rider); both of who suffered life threatening injuries this spring from separate falls at an event in Georgia.  Jan suffered a stroke while Rebbecca punctured her lungs, broke ribs and at my last sighting, couldn’t breath on her own at night. Their conversation was not that different than it would have been a year ago when they were healthy invisible young athletes.  Jan is struggling to re-learn how to speak, Rebbecca had to learn to breathe on her own again and they are both back in the saddle, trying to fight their way to the top.  I felt like I could be listening to a new Jerry Springer show!  These girls are crazy!  It is amazing the amount of love and dedication that our professionals have.

I also had a chance to take Allison Springer (another one of the US top riders) to my family’s home and let her spend some time on a quarter horse chasing cows.  She looked great in her helmet aboard a palomino!  The only other time we “broke free” of the meetings was for a quick tour around Frank Loyd Wrights winter camp in Scottsdale, Taliesin West.  What an amazing spot!

I’m back, with ideas, images and fired up, so watch out!  This weekend I am teaching in Boise and helping with the North Wind Jumper Series fundraiser.  Hope to see you all there.

Looking forward to 2011

Happy December!

Looking out to the jump field

It is starting to clear!

Now that we are in the home stretch for 2010 we are looking forward to a fun filled 2011!

This week several of us got together to toast a fantastic year of horses and friends; old and new.   It was wonderful to have so many like minded souls stuffed into our little house!  A few of us sat down at the end of the night and went through the calendar to see what our possibilities are.  Please take a minute and see what we have added, and what you would like to see on there!  We would like to add a weekend of schooling and dinner at Tulip Springs, some schooling at Rafter K, and a 3 day camp here in McCall that includes the lake, hiking and yoga.  What do you think?

I have also updates a few prices for 2011.  The new pricing is on the services page.  I hope it reflects the increase in the value of your lessons and training due to my continuing education, experience and research.

Next week I am in Scottsdale attending lectures, clinics and forums on safety, teaching, riding and equestrian business.  I hope to come back bubbling over with ideas and information, so watch out!  Lessons on the 18th could be LONG and FULL of more information than holiday minded people can handle!

I will be in Boise this Tuesday, Dec 7th then again Dec 17-18th.  Please, email or call and set up your time now.  Till then; be safe, avoid crazy crowded spaces and enjoy the season!

November 30

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving!  Josh and I had a wonderful time in Utah with friends.  The weather was a little dicey getting back and forth so I flew.  After all the hours in the truck this fall, it felt great to fly!  Unfortunately the temps were too low to do much when I first arrived (high’s in the single digits!) but the weather did improve before I came home.  I was lucky enough to spend my first day skiing in 2010 (yes, for the entire year!) skiing powder with my oldest friends at Powder Mountain (they are way older than I am!)

Now, I am home enjoying the amazing start to the winter here. I went for a quick skin up Tamarack and a skate ski the first day back!  Gotta love over a foot of snow in November!  Hope it keeps coming!

quick ski first day home!

Looking toward home from Tamarack November 28

And alas, it is snowing again!

I am looking forward to our annual Year End Party this Thursday evening.  Hope you are coming if you are in the area.

Next week I am off to the USEA annual meeting in Scottsdale.  I am looking forward to some great lectures, meeting with some “experts” on my latest project, time with friends from around the country; all close to my Mum and Dad!  I have volunteered to be a “rider” for the ICP (instructor certification program) clinic Sunday of the convention.  The clinic should be great fun with David, Karen and Mark Phillips as the instructors.  Come find me if you are going to be in Scottsdale.

The barn will be hopping when I return the 13th.  I have it booked full through the end of January.  I then plan to get organized to go south from approximately Feb 1-April 20.  I hope I am able to keep a full barn going smooth and ski an hour a day till then!

I am already looking forward to a full and fun AZ season with some work out of Bellisima (in Cave Creek,) lots of local shows/derbies, horse trials and maybe a week in Thermal!  I will keep some horses in training and teach in Wickenburg.  I would like to extend an invitation to you to come down, thaw out and ride whenever you get the chance!

Until that time I am available for lessons at least twice a month in Boise, regularly at home and at the North Wind Jumper Series.  Please come join us!
